Alexei Volodin and the Sun Symphony Orchestra

Praised for his exceptional refinement and formidable technique, Alexei Volodin is a pianist in high demand among the world’s leading orchestras. He possesses an extraordinarily wide-ranging repertoire, spanning from Ludwig van Beethoven and Johannes Brahms, through Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Sergei Prokofiev, and Alexander Scriabin, to Rodion Shchedrin and Nikolai Medtner.

Highlights of his 2025/26 season include performances across Europe, Asia, and North America, with appearances in Canada, Israel, Greece, Japan, Spain, the Czech Republic, and China. In recital, Volodin performs in Vilnius, Winnipeg, at the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) in Beijing, and at the Shanghai Concert Hall, further demonstrating the depth and versatility of his solo artistry.

In previous seasons, Volodin has appeared with major orchestras including the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, China NCPA Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, NHK Symphony Orchestra, Kyoto Symphony Orchestra, Strasbourg Philharmonic Orchestra, Antwerp Symphony Orchestra, Mariinsky Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra, and the St Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra. He has collaborated with distinguished conductors such as Valery Gergiev, Semyon Bychkov, Stanislav Kochanovsky, and Robert Trevino.

Volodin is also a frequent recitalist at leading venues worldwide, including the Wiener Konzerthaus, Carnegie Hall, Wigmore Hall, Palau de la Música in Barcelona, the Mariinsky Theatre, Philharmonie de Paris, Alte Oper Frankfurt, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Auditorio Nacional de Música in Madrid, and Zentrum Paul Klee.

An active chamber musician, he maintains long-standing collaborations with artists such as Igor Levit, Claire Huangci, and Sol Gabetta. His past chamber partners include Janine Jansen, Julian Rachlin, and Mischa Maisky, as well as ensembles such as the Borodin Quartet, Modigliani Quartet, Cuarteto Casals, and Cremona Quartet. This season, he appears in trio concerts with artists including Ilya Gringolts, Alban Gerhardt, and Eldbjørg Hemsing, while continuing regular duo collaborations with Igor Levit, Claire Huangci, and his wife, Edith Peña.

Volodin’s most recent recording, released by the Mariinsky label, features Sergei Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 4 under the baton of Valery Gergiev. His recording of Sergei Rachmaninoff solo works for Challenge Classics was released in 2013. He has also recorded a solo album of works by Robert Schumann, Maurice Ravel, and Alexander Scriabin; his earlier Chopin recording received the Choc de Classica award and a five-star rating from Diapason magazine.

A familiar presence at major music festivals, Volodin has appeared at the Kaposvár International Chamber Music Festival, Les Nuits du Château de la Moutte, Variations Musicales de Tannay, Bad Kissingen Summer Festival, La Roque d’Anthéron, Les Rencontres Musicales d’Évian, La Folle Journée, the White Nights Festival in St Petersburg, St Magnus International Festival, InterHarmony Festival, Moscow Easter Festival, and the Dresdner Musikfestspiele.

Born in 1977 in Leningrad, Alexei Volodin studied at the Gnessin Academy in Moscow before continuing with Eliso Virsaladze at the Moscow Conservatory. In 2001, he furthered his studies at the International Piano Academy Lake Como, gaining international recognition after winning the Géza Anda International Piano Competition in Zurich in 2003.
